The Art of the Strand: Collecting Australian South Sea Pearls

A single South Sea pearl is beautiful. A strand of them, perfectly matched, is something else entirely.

Matching a strand is one of the most demanding skills in fine jewellery. Every pearl must share a consistent lustre, a compatible overtone, and a smooth size gradation from one end to the other — all while being sourced from oysters that never produce two identical pearls. A strand of 35 to 45 well-matched Australian South Sea pearls can take months, sometimes years, to assemble. This is why a fine strand is prized far beyond the sum of its individual pearls.

What Makes a Strand Exceptional

When we assess a strand at TayaM, we look at four things: lustre (the sharp, mirror-like reflection on the pearl's surface), surface quality (how clean or blemished each pearl is), shape consistency (round, near round, or circle — and how well the strand holds to one category), and colour harmony (white, silver, pink, or golden overtones, matched pearl to pearl).

A strand where every pearl echoes the next — in size, in colour, in the way it catches the light — is the mark of true craftsmanship, not chance.

Our Current Strand Collection

Our Sydney CBD studio currently holds a range of Australian South Sea pearl strands, from classic 8-11mm strands suited to everyday elegance, through to rare, statement strands reaching 14mm and beyond — the kind of size seen only a handful of times in a season's harvest.

Each strand in our collection has been personally selected and matched, with full transparency on size, lustre grade, and origin.

Visit Us

Pearls are best appreciated in person, where their lustre and colour can shift and shimmer under natural light. We welcome you to visit our private studio at 321 Pitt Street, Sydney CBD, to view and compare our South Sea pearl strands — no two are ever quite the same.
