Australian South Sea pearls are cultivated in the pristine, nutrient-rich waters off the coast of Western Australia, nurtured inside the silver-lipped Pinctada maxima — the largest pearl-producing oyster in the world.
Unlike freshwater pearls, which can be harvested in as little as six months, an Australian South Sea pearl takes two to four years to fully form. Furthermore, each oyster yields only a single pearl at a time, with only a tiny fraction meeting fine jewellery standards. This natural rarity and extended growth period are precisely why they are celebrated as the most valuable cultured pearls on Earth.
South Sea vs. Freshwater: The Key Differences
